Benidorm

Benidorm is the Costa Blanca’s biggest-name holiday resort and the obvious place to start if you want a large choice of all inclusive hotels, entertainment and family attractions. It is energetic, highly developed for tourism and gives you much more to do than simply stay beside the hotel pool.

Levante Beach is the livelier side of the resort, backed by a long promenade and a busy choice of places to eat, drink and spend the evening. Poniente Beach stretches west of the Old Town and can appeal to visitors who like a broader beach and a slightly different pace.

Between them sits Benidorm’s Old Town, where narrow streets lead towards the Balcón del Mediterráneo and viewpoints over the coastline. Families also have easy access to waterparks and other major attractions around the resort.

Benidorm suits families who want attractions on the doorstep, groups looking for nightlife, couples who enjoy a lively resort and travellers who want a wide choice of hotels. If silence and a small traditional resort are your priorities, Albir or another part of the coast may suit you better.

Albir

Albir sits close enough to Benidorm for easy access to the area’s major attractions, but the atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed. It is a good compromise for holidaymakers who want the convenience of a developed resort without being surrounded by Benidorm’s busiest nightlife.

The seafront is suited to strolling, relaxed meals and slower evenings, while the surrounding coastal landscape gives walkers an alternative to days spent entirely around the beach or hotel.

Families can still choose resort-style properties such as Albir Garden, while couples may appreciate the quieter surroundings. Albir works particularly well if one person wants pool and resort time while somebody else wants walking, seafront cafés and a more laid-back base.

Altea

Altea shows a very different side of the Costa Blanca. Its whitewashed old town rises above the Mediterranean, with narrow streets, viewpoints, small shops, restaurants and a distinctive historic centre.

It is less about big all inclusive resort complexes and more about atmosphere. That makes Altea particularly useful as a day or evening trip if you are staying in Benidorm or Albir and want to swap waterparks and hotel entertainment for a slower walk through a more traditional-looking coastal town.

Couples, photographers and visitors who enjoy eating out and wandering rather than organised resort entertainment should put Altea on their Costa Blanca list.

Cala Finestrat

Cala Finestrat gives families a smaller beach-resort base while keeping Benidorm close enough for its attractions and entertainment. The beach setting feels more compact than Benidorm’s long seafronts.

This area is particularly interesting if the hotel is a major part of your holiday. A family resort with pools, slides and entertainment can provide plenty to do during the day, while Benidorm remains available when you want a bigger change of scene.

It is a useful middle ground for parents who want family facilities but do not necessarily want to stay in the centre of Benidorm.

Calpe

Calpe is instantly recognisable because of the Peñón de Ifach, the huge rock that dominates the coastline. Around it you will find beaches, promenades, restaurants and a holiday atmosphere that is generally less intense than central Benidorm.

It is a good choice for travellers who enjoy combining beach days with walks, seafood meals and coastal scenery. Even if your main all inclusive hotel is elsewhere, Calpe can make an enjoyable day out when exploring the northern part of the Costa Blanca.

Alicante

Alicante combines a working Mediterranean city with a holiday-friendly seafront. Instead of spending the whole trip inside a resort, you can mix beach time with shopping, restaurants, marina walks and sightseeing.

Santa Bárbara Castle is one of the city’s major landmarks, while Postiguet Beach puts sand close to the city centre. Alicante is also an important transport hub for exploring the wider Costa Blanca.

It suits travellers who like having more independence and city life around them, although the biggest concentration of traditional package-style all inclusive hotels is found in other resort areas.

Villajoyosa

Villajoyosa is recognised for the colourful houses lining parts of its seafront. It has beaches and restaurants but feels different from the high-rise holiday landscape associated with Benidorm.

It makes a particularly good change of scene for visitors who want to see somewhere with a stronger local identity. Its chocolate-making heritage adds another reason to visit beyond the beach.

Dénia

Dénia sits further north and offers a mix of harbour life, beaches, restaurants and history. The castle overlooking the town gives you something substantial to explore away from the coast, while the port keeps the town connected to the Balearic Islands.

Dénia is better suited to travellers wanting to explore a broader part of the Costa Blanca than to somebody whose only priority is a large self-contained all inclusive resort.

Jávea

Jávea – Xàbia in Valencian – is known for its coastline, coves, viewpoints and relaxed restaurant scene. The area feels more spread out than Benidorm, so it particularly suits travellers who enjoy getting out and exploring.

It is worth considering as part of a northern Costa Blanca day out, especially if scenery and smaller coastal spots appeal more than theme parks and nightlife.
